Graduate Internships at Advocate Art

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Looking to get a foot in the door at a leading illustration agency? Want some experience working with fellow creatives and people who are passionate about working with artists? Interested to discover more about what it takes to work as an artist agent, or a freelance illustrator?

When you first start out in the big wide world, it’s natural to want to learn more about what it takes to make it in your industry of choice. So here at Advocate we decided to set up an internship scheme, helping out others who are also burning with the same questions we had!

We take internships very seriously, in fact, it takes your time and our time so let’s not waste it. We attract students in art history, design, illustration, animation and related courses. You will share in our daily tasks in a structured way – such as folio management, site maintenance, project managing, design – whatever we are working on, even tea making like the rest of us. You will learn how artists are briefed, what’s hot and what you have to do as an illustrator to get work in the real world. You get an honest folio review, from a commercial position – dollar signs in our eyes. We will give you a reference that will make a future employer cry, for the right reasons of course- and hey even maybe a job offer.

There is no mistaking that interns have become essential to the running of this busy agency. We get to spread the Advocate message around tomorrow’s art and design professionals – internationally. We offer a recruiting platform (8 of our current staff were recruited from internships) or even sign new artists as a result (some of our top illustrators were previously interns!)

We forge close links with many colleges and universities and often invite students in for Q&A sessions where they can get advice on their portfolios. We have been sponsors of the illustration exam question for the D&AD board and offered competition prizes including £5000 cash!

Minimum term is 2 weeks but we do have a habit of extending this if we feel it’s been too short.

Fresh off the Press!

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Ever since we sent our new Advocate MaG off to print, we’ve been champing at the bit waiting for them to arrive. Yesterday was the Big Day! On the brightest, warmest day of the year so far our shiny new MaGs arrived in the post! To match Jenny Wiscombe’s summery cover we celebrated with Fab ice lollies.

We were so excited we couldn’t wait to share them with all our clients, so on went the radio and we got to work preparing them to be shipped out to their new homes. Keep an eye on your letterbox – one could well be winging its way to you soon!

Our Advocate MaG is full of the latest trends, designs and artwork from our fantastic greetings card and art licensing illustrators. To see more work by them click on their name above or visit our website! You can also now download our greetings card artists folio from Advocate Art’s homepage – just click on the ‘Card Artist Folio’ link under the search bar!

Tom Percival featured in The Bookseller Magazine!

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

Check out Tom Pervical‘s illustration in the Children’s Bookseller segment of the Bookseller Magazine! The children’s book illustration is featured in an article that discusses the importance of combining strong story concepts and art work that communicates with its target audience in todays competitive children’s book market.
The article covers what publishers look for in book ideas and illustrations, and talks about what they’ll be keeping their eyes peeled for at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. It’s definitely worth a read, so pick up the magazine if you can!

A sample for Pauline Siewert!

Friday, March 1st, 2013

Look at these beautiful lift-the-flap books, illustrated by Pauline Siewert. The books teach children about God and religion through this interactive flap book, and the poems are used to link everyday situations to verses from the bibles.

The flaps throughout the books keep children occupied and redraw attention to the lovely artwork throughout the stories. Have a look at Paulines portfolio on the Advocate website by clicking here.

Advocate Arts new Exhibition Stand!

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Here at Advocate, we’re very excited to unveil our new Exhibition Stand! If you’re visiting us at any fairs or shows in the future, this is where you’ll now find us. It’s been months in the making, and it’s bigger and better than ever before, and we’re very proud. It even glows! You’ll have to pop by for a chat at one of the events to sneak a peek. See you there!

Gabriele Antonini’s work is top bananas!

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Check out Gabriele Antonini’s work on Happy Monkey milkshakes for the Good Natured company! The Advocate Artist produced some fantastic illustrations for Dewgibbons design, who then created the packaging for the smoothie range, winning a DBA Effectiveness Award for the product design!

Gabriele wasn’t monkeying around with his design work though. The brief asked for a concept that would appeal to kids while reassuring parents that the product is a healthy, nutritious lunch box option. He had to create something that would ensure that mums could understand the new product, as well as reflecting the brands ‘silly but not stupid’ personality.

The packaging was recently featured on The Dieline, and you can look at more of Gabriele’s working at his portfolio by clicking here. Good Job, Gabriele, we think your work is chimply marvellous!

Heads up for Heads up!

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

We’ve been extremely busy at Advocate this week getting our 2013 edition of the Heads Up calendar and agency book sent out! The offices have been looking a lot like Santas workshop, with hundreds of boxes to fold and pack, it’s all been very hectic!

The calendar features plenty of wonderful work from our artists throughout 2012, with lots of inspiration to get you through the new year! It ranges from children’s books and greetings cards to real style and photography, and now that these little packages should be arriving, we hope you love Heads Up as much as we do!

At Advocate this week we were excited to receive these fab puzzle samples through our letterbox! (well actually they didn’t fit through the letterbox but you know what we mean!) A number of our art licensing and children’s illustrators have been busy working with WHSmiths to create these beautiful illustrated puzzles.

The puzzle illustration of freelance illustrators Jim Mitchell, Sarah Pitt, David Ouro and Helen Poole are all featured above, but to see more of their art for puzzles and other work click on their name or visit their portfolios on the Advocate Art illustration Agency website.

Big Up from Jeannine Rundle

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Here at Advocate Art we love to hear when our freelance illustrators are happy with the job we are doing for them. So it was lovely to learn that greetings card designer Jeanine Rundle sent Ed this lovely message yesterday.

Hi Ed (and all),

Hope this finds you well.

I just wanted to send a quick note as it has just occured to me that I have never thanked you and the others at Advocate for the good job they do in my behalf. I have just done a load of invoices to cover recent sales and I realised that you took me on at a time when things were actually looking quite bleak for my business. So…thanks very much for all that you and everyone else does in putting my work forward and thinking of me when new commissions come in. I love doing what I do and the more work the better so please keep it coming!

Here’s to many more years of working successfully together.

Jeannine
Freelance illustrator Jeannine produces gorgeous greeting’s cards, posters and art for licensing, in a range of  styles from cute and quirky to retro and humorous. To see more of greetings card illustrator Jeannine’s artwork have a look in her portfolio on the advocate Art illustration agency website!
