Here at Advocate, we’re known to indulge in our childish sides. Which is a good thing seeing as we’ve got children’s book illustrations coming out of our ears! So we were more than delighted to discover that our lovely children’s book illustrator Sarah Horne has been elevated to the glorious, lofty heights of children’s television stardom!
Angela Mitchell’s debut children’s book ‘The Jelly that Wouldn’t Wobble‘ is all about a jelly that won’t…well…wobble!. What’s worse is that it has been specially requested by Princess Lolly for her 89th birthday party. What’s a loyal subject to do?!
Beautifully illustrated by Sarah Horne, in her distinctive animated and richly-coloured style, this story was an instant hit when it was published by Maverick in May 2012. In fact it was so bold that it couldn’t be kept on the page, and has only gone and been read on CBeebies Bedtime Stories by Sally Phillips!
If you’re a big kid like all of us Advocaters, you can curl up with a glass of warm milk and a cookie and watch Sally’s reading of this great story here.
To see more of Sarah Horne‘s children’s book illustrations and other work, click on her name or visit her portfolio on our website.

Here at Advocate we were delighted to receive this lovely book from one of our children’s illustrators Francisca Marquez!
Ever wondered just how dinosaur bones go from being buried deep underground to being displayed in our museums? Got a hidden desire to go looking for these prehistoric monsters yourself? We follow a bunch of palaeontologists on their trip to discover a ginormous triceratops, and watch them put it together piece by piece. Better yet, there are tips on how to carry out your own excavation! Francisca’s charming and lively illustrations make those bones leap off the page, as she captures the excitement of making a huge discovery. This is perfect for curious young dinosaur fans!

Check out these Collins Big Cat Phonics books, illustrated by two of our Advocate artists, Sarah Horne and Anna Shuttlewood.
‘Zog and Zebra’ takes us all the adventures of Zog the alien and his friend Zebra, while ‘Get up, Tom’ tells us the story of sleepy Tom, the boy who just won’t wake up! Not even dog or cat can get him out of bed!
We were very excited to receive these samples, the illustrations look fantastic and are a great example of the top quality work our artists produce! You can see more of Sarah’s work in her portfolio here, and more of Anna’s work here.

Advocate would like to introduce you to one of our freelance artists, Nicola Anderson! Nicola primarily uses illustrator and photoshop to create her lovely children’s illustrations, and her bold shapes and bright colours really stand out!
Her quirky character designs and compositions are beautiful additions to the books they’re applied to. To see more of Nicola’s work, check out her portfolio on the Advocate website!
“Hi, I’m Nicola, I was born in Liverpool, and grew up in the lovely industrial town of Widnes.
Ever since I can remember I have never been happier than when I am creating something. One of my earliest memories is crying my eyes out in nursery and the easel and paints being the only thing that would console me.
I moved to Manchester after I gained a degree in Graphic Design from Bolton University and have lived and worked there as a digital creative ever since.
Manchester has a great creative hub and I feel lucky to be surrounded by so many inspiring people.
My work is generally sketched, then coloured in Illustrator and textured in Photoshop.
Other randomness about me:
I love travelling.
I have two mongrel dogs, Spike and Cody.
The Muppet Christmas Carol is my favourite film.
I have an identical twin sister. We have no special powers.”

One of our freelance illustrators, Mike Byrnes, has been very busy with the release of a book he recently worked on for KarBen Publishing. ‘The Purim Superhero’ has been receiving glowing reviews on Amazon and on Kirkus Reviews. He’s also featured in an interview with the author!
The book is about the Jewish Holiday, Purim, and how young Nate wants to wear an alien costume for it. All his friends, however, are going dressed as superheroes and he wants to fit in, so what will he do? With the help of his two dads, he finds a surprising solution
Mike’s illustrations bring a vibrant, lively aesthetic to the book, and they sit beautifully with the message of moral tolerance and being yourself! Have a look at the cake Mike got at his ‘The Purim Superhero’ launch party, all credit to Keshet, who made the fantastic cake, and Next@19th who organized the party.
You can see some more of Mike’s great work on his portfolio by clicking here, as well as being able to purchase the book on amazon here.
