Advocate Art would like to introduce Melanie Mitchell, she is one of Advocate’s most popular artists. Melanie has been with us for some time and her colourful paintings of animals and children have led to her having great success as a children’s book illustrator. To see more of Melanie’s work visit her portfolio on our website by clicking here, or read on to find out a little bit more about her background.
I live in a small gwynedd village, near the Cardigan Bay coastline and the Snowdonia mountains. I have two beautiful kids and share a studio with my partner and fellow Advocate illustrator Paul Nicholls ( who’s great for throwing paper balls at!)
I studied illustration at the North East Wales College of Art and Design, there I gained a degree. I’ve now been working as a illustrator for over 10 years and I’ve been lucky enough to work on a whole range of different projects from packaging to greeting cards, but children’s books is what I specialize in and something I’ve wanted to do since I was little. I very much enjoy my work, from the initial sketches to the painting and the satisfaction of seeing the finished product, its so great to see a child enjoying a book I’ve illustrated (even if its only to chew it!)

At Advocate we really love to hear when our illustrators and clients are working well together. So imagine how happy we were to hear about this message sent to our artist Christine Tappin. Have a look on the Advocate website to see more of Christine’s work.

We’re so pleased that you’ve enjoyed working on the project, and that it’s proven to be such a good learning experience for you! Also I have to say how impressed I am that even though you were in loads of pain with your neck and arm, you always met deadlines and never complained to us about it but found ways of improving the situation and helping it get better
We work with some artists who are always asking for more time due to pretty minor issues so the fact that you dealt with something that really impacted your work, so well and professionally, is fantastic!
I’m really glad you’re almost back to normal now – I do a lot of pilates too, I love it
Thanks for being so lovely and easy to work with, you’ve made the project a pleasure to do – hopefully we can work together again soon, as your work is really loved by everyone here!

Born in Britanny (France),I grew up in the countryside but I really love living in the city. I live and work in Nantes.
I have been drawing since I can hold a pen, and never stop drawing and painting ever since. It’s only after my studies in biology and landscape architecture that I finally decided to make a living out of my hobby!
I have have been using tempera for my recent artworks, I also use acrylics and watercolour for my sketch books.
I love sketching, especially when I travel or I visit new places andI am a real radio and music addict when I work
If I wasn’t an illustrator? I would love to be a chef, not just any kind though: a pasta chef!

Jon Davis is a talented illustrator that has been with Advocate for a while, but we’d like to tell you a bit more about him. As you can see his children’s book illustrations are fun, charming and beautifully coloured.
Read on to learn more about Jon or see more of his work by visiting our website.
I always loved drawing as a child. Paints, pencils, felt tips, crayons, anything would do, and art lessons were my favourite at school by far.
So, I decided to study Illustration at Glyndwr University, Wrexham, and after that spent some time doing 3D animation. I got some of my films screened at a few festivals around the world, including Raindance, but not long after I returned to illustration.
I find my work and ideas naturally fall into the world of children’s books, and I love the liveliness and breadth of imagination you can use with them.
I work digitally, in Photoshop with a tablet and pen, because the ‘undo’ function saves me from the depths of frustration.
I currently live and work in Twickenham
