Emmeline Pidgen on Advocate CD cover

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Recently you will have seen blog posts on the new Advocate Heads Up calendar and agency book which comes with a CD full of our lovely illustrators’ work. Well our featured artist on the CD cover is children’s illustrator Emmeline Pidgen and she has sent us a few words describing why she made this illustration.

“I created this illustration in honour of Roald Dahl day 2011. Roald Dahl stories were a big part of my life growing up, and when I discovered this quote from the man himself I couldn’t help but attempt to illustrate the true magic to be found within the covers of story books. ‘Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.’ – Roald Dahl”

Wording on the CD:

Contains: E-book pdf of artists’ folios – additional folio pieces as medium resolution – files suitable for presentation – images themed in categories e.g. “dinosaurs”.

Does not contain: viruses – programs that will crash your computer – works from prima-donnas or divas.

Igor Sinkovec Biography

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

Igor Sinkovec works as an illustrator and animator, mainly within a comical and whimsical style aimed towards the younger generation. He works in both traditional and digital mediums to create his work. Here is a little more about him.

“I was born in Slovenia in 1978. As a kid I was dreaming of becoming a truck driver… or at least an astronaut. As it turned out, I got stuck behind a drawing board. Sometimes I still draw a road tanker or a space-shuttle.

I draw illustrations and comics for magazines, book covers, picture-books, school work-books and character designs.

Along with illustration I also work as a 2D animator (film and games) and animation director. Among other projects I have animated, written and directed 2 cartoon shorts Ignatz (pilot episode for a series, supported by European film fund MEDIA) and Egon the Hat (supported by Slovenian Ministry of Culture).

I’m mostly drawing for children and youth. I like the humorous & whimsical side of life and I guess that reflects in my work.

I’m working with computer as well as with classic mediums.

When I’m drawing I often listen to music, but there are times when I need complete silence to focus on what I’m doing.

I also love books. There’s just something personal and intimate about them. I usually read in the morning, before starting to work; a great start to the day.

I live in Ljubljana with my girlfriend who is also an illustrator.”

Featured artist – Trystan Mitchell

Friday, January 13th, 2012

At Advocate art we are excited to announce Trystan Mitchell as our featured artist of the month. Inspired by Victorian illustrators, UK adventure comics from the 70′s and European and British folklore, Trystan specialies in narrative illustration for the older reader. After studying at the Falmouth School of Art his first love is gouache illustration but he now predominantly colours digitally. Read on to find out more about Trystan and to see a collection of his artwork.

As an illustrator and paper-meddler, Trystan has scratched away at various surfaces since realising he could do more with a crayon than chewing it to a satisfyingly gooey pulp. Living in the wilds, originally on the Lancashire moors and later migrating to the fringes of  Bodmin Moor, he spent twelve years living outdoors and travelling the UK as a jobbing sign-writer and labourer, but now enjoys the relative convenience of bricks and electricity.

Fascinations for UK adventure comics of the 1970s, classic Victorian illustrators, and the folklore of Britain and Europe, created a passion for narrative illustration and the universal power of story.

He is largely self-taught after studying at Falmouth School of Art,  and his favourite tools are a brace of trusty clutch pencils and a sable brush. Although his first love is the more ambient world of gouache illustration, most of his current work is coloured digitally.

With an eclectic range of clients, including sign-writing for Rick Stein’s famous Seafood School, his early work appeared in ‘Squall’ magazine and the UK Guardian newspaper. He has worked freelance for Pearson, Ballon, Oxford University Press, and De Agostini, and is now represented by us here at Advocate Art Illustration Agency.

In quieter moments, when not scribbling or reading, he is seen navigating his way over the Cornish moors with ancient maps in search of sunken villages and buried treasure.”

Kate is in Boston!

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Our senior agent Kate is jet setting around the US this week, spending a few days in Boston before flying to Atlanta, meeting with lots of clients and showing off our illustrators fantastic work. The grand entrance of this publishing house was slightly daunting for Kate’s first meeting! Obviously it’s not called The Big Fat Publishing House, but we don’t want to give too much information away just in case our competitors are reading . . . !

One lot of clients were so happy with our level of service and loved our illustrators so much that they treated her to lunch . . . a new thing for Kate this year – fig pizza!

Paul Chipperfield Biography

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

Here at Advocate we are happy to be representing Paul Chipperfield, a fine artist working primarily with digital media to create quirky characters in interesting environments. His extremely imaginative illustrations are based around narrative and children’s storybooks. Read on to find out a little more about him.

“Illustrating from my studio in a delightful former watchmaker’s cottage in Coventry, I am a happy beneficiary of an area positively teeming with illustrative inspiration, contrary to popular opinion of the town! My residence here is a result of having studied Illustration at Coventry University; I was in fact born and raised in Essex, where my passion for drawing first flourished.

My roots are ingrained in fine art, however, the allure of commercial illustration and the challenge of working to a brief proved to be too strong! A member of the Association of Illustrators, I love to immerse myself in all things illustrative. Currently, I work digitally, having embraced new technology and all the wonder and convenience that it entails. However, I suspect pencils, paint and paper will lure me back yet, given time!

My style is a charming blend of whimsical characters in fantasy settings, with a strong sense of narrative; quite frequently an overflow of the fertile depths of my imagination! Specialising in children’s books and greeting cards, my work is rich in detail and strongly evocative of traditional media.”
