Lawrence Chase Biography

Friday, August 31st, 2012

Advocate Art would like to tell you a bit more about Lawrence Chase. Lawrence originally from St.Albans, specialises in children’s book illustration. He uses a range of techniques to generate his images, we love how he combines traditional pencil on watercolour paper and digital colouring. Read Lawrence’s biography below and check out his portfolio of work on the Advocate website.

I was born on the 6th April 1985 in St.Albans where I lived for the first 15 years of my life, before moving to Luton with a brief stay in Watford. I currently live with my girlfriend and our goldfish George in a sleepy little village called Markyate. Which isn’t always that sleepy when airplanes fly over on their way to distant faraway lands, like Edinburgh! Growing up I always liked to draw, especially characters from books or videogames. I even opened a small shop in my bedroom where I sold my pictures to family and friends. My favourite children’s books were the Professor Brainstorm series, illustrated by Heath Robinson. With their mix of humour and over-engineered contraptions that have always fascinated me. Art was the only thing I ever saw myself doing, so I enrolled on a Fine Art BA(hons) course at Bedfordshire University and graduated in 2009. Since then I have embarked on a career in illustration, using both traditional pencil on watercolour paper, and digital colouring techniques to make my kooky drawings come to life.

Anna Wardle Biography

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

Anna Wardle is one of Advocate Art‘s finest digital artist. Her love for the quirky and Japenese influence certainly shines through her artwork. With her fun and fresh character designs, we can certainly see her work in booksgreeting cards or art for product!

I grew up in West Moors, a quiet little village 20 minutes from ‘sunny’ Bournemouth.

Ever since I could remember I have been inspired by art and comic books and took this through all of my education. In primary school I drew this dinosaur my teacher went mad and showed it to my mum when she came to pick me up then hung it on the walls in the classroom. From then on I have always tried to be the best I could be in art as it seemed to be the only thing I showed an interest in. I only started using digital media in 2010 and have been pushing myself ever since. I am very much inspired by artists such as Range Murata, Camilla D’Errico, Inio Asano, Jonny Duddle and Loish.

I think my inspiration through life must be Japan. Everything to do with it is so quirky and incredible; their music, movies and fashion (modern Harajuku/Lolita to traditional Kimono’s). I love their embrace of anything new and different. The thing that drew me to Japan originally was the anime which I am a huge fan of and Studio Ghibli which can trigger even the most narrow minded person’s imagination.

I have currently decided after living away for 3 years studying Illustration at the University of Gloucestershire, to move back home for a while before building up the money to move into the heart of Bournemouth as, even though the British weather can let us down, it is still a beautiful place to live regardless.

Valerie Black Biography

Friday, August 24th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to introduce Valerie Black! Her work is fantastic for mystical and fantasy stories, and she used traditional techniques to capture atmosphere in her illustrations. She likes the idea of mystery and spiritual aspects, which she puts into her artwork. Her work is creative and new and perfect for young fiction illustration. Check out more of her work in her portfolio on the advocate website!

Born in 1987 in Sofia, Bulgaria, I have spent almost all my life in a city, reading books about the desert islands, magical forests and haunted houses in small villages, and maybe this is what made me choose to live in a small town in the UK, surrounded by beautiful forests and old castles it proved to be the most inspiring environment for me. Since I can remember I was trying to draw living creature around me, tying to capture their emotions and then making up a little story about them. I think Disney’s classics both influenced and inspired my drawings back then.

I graduated with Graphic Art course in the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, where I got more familiar with older techniques like, lithography, etching. drypoint and linocut, as well as improving my composition and drawing skills. During my course I got a scholarship for a student exchange program, which took me to the UK, where I decided to take an illustration course. This determined my future as an artist.

I think most of my influences come from the old masters like Rembrandt, Goya and Hieronymus Bosch. And for an inspiration boost I read books or have a little walk in a nearby forest. I would describe my work as mystical, spiritual and mysterious, containing hidden stories and narratives. I like my illustrations to draw the viewer in so he/she can see different elements, adding to the overall feeling of the image.

Amy Husband Biography

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Advocate Art proudly presents Amy Husband, an illustrator from East Yorkshire. All of Amy’s work is beautifully hand produced and her designs are suitable for greetings cards and childrens book illustration.

I was born and brought up in the beautiful East Yorkshire countryside and so far I haven’t strayed far. I now live in a little village near York, which is a city that I love. Art was always my favourite subject at school and I’ve always known I wanted to do something creative. I studied Graphic Arts at Liverpool School of Art and have illustrated several children’s picture books. My first of which ‘Dear Miss’ was voted the winner of the 2010 ‘Read It Again’ Children’s Picture book Award. I would refer to myself as an illustrator. My work is hand produced as I love working with
materials and having a hands on approach. I work largely with watercolours and use elements of collage. Finding the perfect piece of collage material to incorporate into an illustration is a delight! When I’m not illustrating I like spending time outdoors, going for walks, jogging, and spending time with friends and family.
