Rosemary Shojaie Biography

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to introduce you to Rosemary Shojaie. Graduated from Cambridge School of Art, Rosemary loves to illustrate classic literature and we also think her style suits childrens fiction as well! Learn more about Rosemary below, or see more of her work in her portfolio on the Advocate website.

I was born in 1987 and spent most of my childhood growing up in upstate New York.  I received my bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in Latin, but I decided to change paths entirely to move to England and pursue a career I had always dreamt of.  I recently completed my MA in Children’s Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art.  It has been wonderfully refreshing for me to write and illustrate my own story ideas for younger children; I am also especially keen on illustrating classic literature and stories from the opera.

If I wasn’t an illustrator, my ideal second career choice would be playing (violin) in an operatic pit orchestra!  The piece of music closest to my heart is the opera La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini.  In my spare time, some of my favourite things to do include learning languages, playing my violin, reading, travelling, cycling and learning how to sail.

I am currently experimenting with different media and techniques, including pastel, gouache, pencil and collage.  I hope to continue to bring a level of sensitivity, detail and atmosphere to all of my future work.

Evi Gstottner Biography

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Evi Gstottner is a new artist here at Advocate. She specialises in children’s picture book illustration. We love her mystical and atmospheric watercolour images and we are sure they are going to be very popular! Read on the learn more about Evi’s background or visit the Advocate website to see more work in her portfolio.

I am an illustrator and visual artist with a passion for picture books. In 2009 I graduated from the Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge with an MA in Children’s Book Illustrations.

I was born and brought up in Austria surrounded by beautiful and dramatic landscapes and I still have an enduring fascination with mysterious castles and secret gardens. Some other things that inspire me are vintage ornaments, elaborate patterned papers and old delicate lace.

For my picture book illustrations I mostly use watercolors. Recently I also started to experiment with other mediums like collage, acrylics and digital media. My work is very decorative and I like creating fine detailed pictures. I love stories that are magical and whimsical as well as those that have a slightly moral or educational touch to them.

My aim as an artist is to create and illustrate stories that delight and not corrupt or deceive.

Sarah Pitt Biography

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to tell you a bit more about Sarah Pitt. She is an artist who illustrates for both Children’s books and greeting cards. Her paintings are cute and colourful making her work very popular for the 0-5 age range. Read on to learn more about Sarah, or see more of her work in her portfolio on the Advocate website.

I graduated from Central St Martins with an Hons degree in Textile Design and after a brief couple of years as a Textile Designer (one of my dress fabrics featured in Vogue magazine)! I moved into the much happier world of greetings cards. Here I discovered that jolly reindeers and happy snowmen were really my thing and have over the years been filling my loft with samples of my artwork on cards, wrap, crackers, mugs, musical ties!! It wasn’t too difficult to then take the next step into illustrating for Children’s books which I really enjoy, putting characters in new situations, giving them expressions and bringing the story to life.

I live in Hertfordshire with my husband and two kids, Molly and Harry and newest addition, Poppy the Cocker Spaniel. We like being outdoors quite a lot, walking in the Lake and Peak  districts, body-boarding in Cornwall, or just out on our bikes.

Alicia Jennings – My Three Week Internship

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

I really enjoyed working at Advocate. I was made very welcome and it gave me a great insight into what actually happens in an agency.

I really enjoyed seeing all of the illustrator’s work and seeing the wide variety that is out there.

It has made me realise how much I want to be in the illustration business and has definitely spurred me on to hopefully become a children’s illustrator one day.

I am very grateful for the opportunity given to me here and I have thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Thank you Advocate Art!!!!

Christian Cornia Biography

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to introduce you to Christian Cornia, he is one or our newest artists here at Advocate. We think his characters are fun and energetic and perfect for young fiction books. Have a look at more of Christian’s work in his portfolio on the Advocate website or read on to learn more about the artist.

I was born in Modena [Italy] in late 1975. Now I live in Vignola, the city of cherries, with Otto, my eight kg cat (Otto in Italian means eight).

When I was 4 years old, looking at a comic book, I decided that I would be a comic illustrator, and not an astronaut or a fireman like other children.  I have drawn for as long as I can remember and have always created my own comics for my friends.

I’m fascinated by the cartoon style that has exploded in recent years and looking on internet for new inspiration sources is part of my daily routine. I think it’s important to continue to study every day to improve my style.

I work digitally but I’ll remain a secret lover of the pencil and I don’t move without a sketchbook in my bag for drawing everything that I see and think.

I don’t like to call myself as an artist, I prefer labelling myself as a craftsman, a producer of stories and images.
