Chris Embleton in Australia…

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Today at Advocate we learnt that one of our artists, Chris Embleton, is featured on the front page of the Ice Water Press website, they are an Australian publisher of children’s books. Not only does the new children’s book he illustrated appear in ‘featured this month’ but he is also their featured artist! Read on the see the interview, have a look at his book on the Ice Water Press website or visit Chris’ children’s book illustration portfolio on our website to see more of his work!

Illustrator Spotlight: Meet Chris Embleton-Hall

The first two delightful books in the Little Discoveries series are published this month. We chat to the lovely UK illustrator, Chris Embleton-Hall.

What inspired you to become an illustrator?

I had always drawn from an early age and used to spend a few hours drawing with my Grandad. I suppose it developed from there.

What do you love the most about your job?
Creating artwork that other people will get enjoyment from and seeing a finished book in print.

How long does it take you to illustrate a book like Little Discoveries?

Can depend on other workloads at the time but probably about 4 to 6 weeks.

Who is your favourite character in the Little Discoveries series so far?
Probably Scooter the Cat.

Any advice for up and coming illustrators?
It is hard work and took me about a year of taking my portfolio around before I was lucky enough to be taken on by my agent, Advocate. I have been with them 10 years now and the work has kept coming. Perseverance is the key and I am now looking at hiring a workspace to keep my homelife and worklife separate. After 10 years of working from home I need a bit of social interaction as it can be a bit isolating so hopefully this will add to my illustration experience. I wouldn’t do any other job though.

Advocate Featured in Art and Design Licensing Sourcebook

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Advocate Art are excited to let you know that an interview with agent Hannah, about future trends, was featured in the Art and Design Licensing Sourcebook for summer 2012. Also featured on the page is one of Hannah’s beautiful mood boards which are used to communicate Advocate’s ideas to artists and potential clients. Read to see what Hannah has to say about ‘future fashions’ or visit the sourcebook website to download the book.

Advocate Art

Advocate is always on the hunt for new trends and regularly turns predictions into mood boards to share with artists and clients.

Past Meets Present

“Two themes crop up here: a combination of traditional crafting techniques (appliqué, cross-stitch, knitting etc.) are given a modern digital look with a 1950s’ colour palette; and an Edwardian take which combines traditional botanical etchings with a modern colour palette of teal, muted mauve and lemon yellow.”

Design Classics

“Taking inspirations from mid-20th century design icons such as typewriters, telephones and classic movie posters, this colour palette is bold and masculine”

Holiday Time

‘The final trend we’re expecting to see a lot of in the coming months, this combines bright, bold prints with tropical icons such as parrots, palm trees and pineapples. We are also seeing a resurgence of nautical-themed icons such as anchors and retro sailor tattoos, tying in nicely with British seaside nostalgia. “

Bluebell Woods illustrated by Rebecca Harry

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Advocate children’s illustrator Rebecca Harry has recently illustrated these gorgeous new books from the series Bluebell Woods, called Florence’s River Adventure and Honey’s Midnight show, written by Liss Norton. The books are filled with Rebecca’s pencil illustrations and the intriguing fold out covers hide all the woodland characters beneath. Read on to find out more about the stories and click here to get yourself a copy. If you’d like to see more of Rebecca’s work, click here to visit her online portfolio.

Florence the rabbit is playing beside the Babbling Brook when she discovers an old boat tangled in the reeds. With the help of her friends, she fixes it up, and soon they are heading downstream on an adventure of a lifetime. But will the friends ever solve the mystery of the boat’s original owners?

Honey is delighted when the Eyebright family, a troupe of travelling players, sets up camp beside her home. She and her friends can’t wait to see the midnight show they are putting on. But as Honey joins in with the rehearsals, she can’t help wishing that her own life was as exciting as life onstage…

and on Wednesday from 9.30 – 16.30

Come and see us at DIAL @ PG Live

DIAL@PG Live stands for Design, Image & Art Licensing, and is a new section of the Progressive Greetings Live trade exhibition which runs on the 29th and 30th May at the airy Business Design Centre in London.

As publishers of The Licensing Source Book and organisers of The Licensing Awards, the team at Max Publishing are very much part of the dynamic licensing world.  DIAL@PG Live reinforces their commitment and allows the show to shine a big spotlight on the design, image and art licensing sector.

The new DIAL area – which encompasses Advocate Art and 15 other licensing companies and artists – acknowledges the increasing popularity and success of art and design licensing. (in addition, many of the 250+  greeting card publishers who are exhibiting in the main part of the show, are ‘licensing friendly’ too)

Advocate Art will be exhibiting on stand 612 in DIAL, on the balcony.

All visitors are treated to free refreshments throughout the day, as well as a really great lunch. After you’ve whizzed around the stands (and hopefully come to see us), you are also welcome to attend the post show drinks at 5:45pm, again courtesy of the organisers.

In the same vein the show is also declaring ‘open for business’ on a new Artists’ Quarter, which has been designed for established and new artists to come along and sell their designs. There are some very talented people out there, and PG Live is where to find them!

So come and join us in London this May for Progressive Greetings Live. Simply CLICK HERE to register and receive the Exhibition Preview which will be ‘hot off the press’ shortly!
