Regina Silva Biography

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to introduce one of our new artists, Regina Silva. We think her bright designs would be perfect for greetings cards. See more of Regina’s work by visiting her portfolio on our website or read on to learn more about the artist.

I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, and have been drawing ever since I can remember. I used to get in trouble for drawing on the margins of my school books (my maths and Philippine history books, especially) and on the walls of our house before I moved on to paper, canvas, and eventually, the computer.

I graduated with a degree in Multimedia Arts in 2005 and went on to work for several years as a motion graphics designer for television before I realized I wanted to get into illustration. I enjoy drawing cute, fun, and whimsical animals, people, and objects. I see my style/work as a reflection of my personality– happy, bright, and not one to take life so seriously.

When not drawing or designing, I love travelling (I try to document my travels in a sketchbook), taking photos, dabbling in arts and crafts, and watching movies.

Melanie Mitchell Biography

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to introduce Melanie Mitchell, she is one of Advocate’s most popular artists. Melanie has been with us for some time and her colourful paintings of animals and children have led to her having great success as a children’s book illustrator. To see more of Melanie’s work visit her portfolio on our website by clicking here, or read on to find out a little bit more about her background.

I live in a small gwynedd village, near the Cardigan Bay coastline and the Snowdonia mountains. I have two beautiful kids and share a studio with my partner and fellow Advocate illustrator Paul Nicholls ( who’s great for throwing paper balls at!)

I studied illustration at the North East Wales College of Art and Design, there I gained a degree. I’ve now been working as a illustrator for over 10 years and I’ve been lucky enough to work on a whole range of different projects from packaging to greeting cards, but children’s books is what I specialize in and something I’ve wanted to do since I was little. I very much enjoy my work, from the  initial sketches to the painting and the satisfaction of seeing the finished product, its so great to see a child enjoying a book I’ve illustrated (even if its only to chew it!)

Sends, sends, sends!

The Advocate office has been very busy this week with post Bologna follow ups. Our team has be creating these lovely folders to send to publishers and remind them of all the wonderful artists they took a liking to from the brand new portfolios that we took to the fair. Each folder contains printed versions of portfolio pages as well as digital images so the publisher really gets to grips what each illustrator has to offer. As you can see there is a huge list for us to get through and believe us when we say it is ever growing! Visit our website to see the newly designed portfolios by clicking here. V for Vendetta!

Thursday, March 29th, 2012
Check out our new acquisition…

Here at the Vendetta offices we are the proud new owners of a cool but somewhat creepy Vendetta Mask.

From the original DC Comic called ‘V for Vendetta‘ Written by Alan Moore (we are all big fans) through to the feature film based on the same story through to recent protests where the Mask featured predominantly.

The mask has became synonymous with ideas of anarchy and rebellion.

Have a look at the BBC’s interview with Alan Moore to see his thoughts on the symbol he has created.

This is a symbol that resonates deeply with us here at Vendetta were we have purposely set out to resist the mundane, try to do thing differently with our own creative twists and choose to avoid the main stream studios.

So as you can see. We really love our mask!

Big Up for Christine Tappin!

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

At Advocate we really love to hear when our illustrators and clients are working well together. So imagine how happy we were to hear about this message sent to our artist Christine Tappin. Have a look on the Advocate website to see more of Christine’s work.

We’re so pleased that you’ve enjoyed working on the project, and that it’s proven to be such a good learning experience for you! Also I have to say how impressed I am that even though you were in loads of pain with your neck and arm, you always met deadlines and never complained to us about it but found ways of improving the situation and helping it get better :) We work with some artists who are always asking for more time due to pretty minor issues so the fact that you dealt with something that really impacted your work, so well and professionally, is fantastic!

I’m really glad you’re almost back to normal now – I do a lot of pilates too, I love it :)

Thanks for being so lovely and easy to work with, you’ve made the project a pleasure to do – hopefully we can work together again soon, as your work is really loved by everyone here!

Kathy Heaser Biography.

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to tell you a bit more about one of our artists, Kathy Heaser. Her background is in art for films which has given her experience in many different styles. As a result her work is versatile and eclectic and perfect for greeting cards and art licensing. Read on to learn a bit more about Kathy or visit our website to see more of her work.

Kathy grew up in Wortham, Suffolk and now lives on a 70ft dutch barge on the river Thames near Kingston with her boyfriend, new baby and cat. This is also also where she works. Which is great in the summer but she needs gloves on to draw in the winter!

Kathy’s mum is an illustrator, and was always painting something for work or fun. Kathy’s earliest painting memory is of helping her mum paint the scenery for the local amdram society when she was 5. She did the white dots on the toadstools on the enchanted forest backdrop!

Kathy received her training on the job as graphic artist /illustrator for feature films.

Kathy’s artwork is eclectic to say the least, working in film has meant having to work in a large variety of styles, anything from ancient greek maps on leather to 18th century caricatures, to medieval illuminated manuscripts, to 1960s psychedelic posters!

Kathy describes her self as an illustrator / graphic artist for feature films. ‘I create artwork for props in films, i.e the wonka bar for Charlie and the chocolate factory, as well as illustrating for magazines, book covers, decorative items.’

Her favourite piece of work was creating Willy Wonka’s Handwriting in the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Kathy’s interests outside of her work include playing double bass (badly) in a bluegrass band, gigging occasionally around south London, sailing and pilates.

Kathy has a ‘ship’s cat’ called Rosie and if she wasn’t working as an illustrator would quite like to be running a dingy sailing school in the Mediterranean!
