Marie Allen Biography

Marie Allen is an English based illustrator specialising illustration for children’s publishing, including children’s picture books. She describes herself as a “freelance illustrator who specializes in juvenile design.”

Marie was born in Barking Essex in 1976. She spent most of her childhood and teenage years living in Hornchurch, Essex but moved to Manchester when she was 20 where she achieved a HND in illustration.

From a young age Marie always had an interest in art and would spend hours creating little story books for her Mum who was also a keen artist. Busy Bumble Bee was her biggest hit!  She can always remember having a huge interest in the munch bunch characters. This is what first inspired her into creating her own characters which in turn developed into her love of art.

Her artwork is bright, fun and juvenile. Creating simple fun charchture she thinks relates to children. She firstly creates a pencil image then after scanning the image in she colours up the artwork on Photoshop, adding shading and texture if needed. She enjoys all the artwork she creates but if she was to favour one she would favour illustrating jungle animals or animals in general.  In her spare time she enjoys walking and biking she also enjoys a glass of wine followed by a ruby!

The Pope Twins Biography

The pope Twins, Liz and Kate Pope born and raised in Derbyshire, now live on opposite sides of Chesterfield. After both gaining first-class degrees in Surface Pattern from Staffordshire University, Liz and Kate began their careers as professional greeting card and book illustrators, working together to create their signature colorful and collaged style.

Liz describes herself as the illustrator of the team, sketching out designs which she then gives to Kate to work up in paint, collage and patterned paper. This mixture of illustration and design gives their charming art-works a sense of vibrancy, movement and eclecticism.

When they’re not drawing, Liz and Kate like to scour charity shops for bargains, ensuring their personal styles are just as individual as their art work!

Natalie Hinrichsen Biography

Natalie Hinrichsen was born in 1974 in Cape Town and still lives there now. She studied Graphic Design at the Cape Town University of Technology. Natalie specialises in children’s illustration. To get inspired, she looks at other children’s books particularly “Lavender’s Blue” illustrated by Harold Jones which she has had since she was about ten.  She would describe her style as classic storybook. She works in gouache and watercolours.  In 2005 she won the Vivian Wilkes award for a book about taking care of the environment called “Tell the Moon”.  She does not have a favourite piece, but she always looks forward to what’s coming next.

When Natalie is not working she enjoys walking, reading and browsing second hand shops.

If she was not an illustrator she would be a music teacher, she taught privately for a while before illustration work took up more of her time.  While she works she likes to listen to audio books and music, mostly Stephen Sondheim musicals.

Marina Fedotova Biography

Marina Fedotova is a children’s illustrator from Moscow, designing children’s picture books, working freelance and via her Advocate Art Illustration agency in the UK.

Marina Fedotova was born in Moscow City, where she is still living and working today as a professional children’s illustrator. She describes her art as “full of kindness and witty humour”. Marina was classically trained as a watercolourist, she loves adding minute details to her freelance picture book designs and greetings cards, such as the knit on a woollen scarf or a fluttering butterfly over head. She is inspired by the puppeteers who make their own dolls and perform locally to her- many of whom are her friends, she, like them, likes to bring her creations to life.

Jeannine Rundle

Jeannine Rundle is an English based illustrator who specialises in illustration for greeting card design. Jeannine was born in Portsmouth and grew up mainly in Oxfordshire and now lives in Devon. She has always loved to draw and design.

Fifteen years ago Jeannine learned Photoshop while designing for a baby wear company.  At this point she decided to go alone at being a greeting card illustrator. Jeannine does most of her greeting card illustration on the computer.

Jeannine has one dog three alpacas, five sheep and one horse. Other than doing greeting card designs Jeannine enjoys riding her horse, reading, eating and drinking, but not all at the same time. Her favourite book is The Time Travellers Wife and her f Favourite film is Sixth Sense. When asked what she would do if she was not an illustrator/designer she said “doesn’t bare thinking about. Possibly a nuclear scientist or prime minister.”

Jane Heyes

Jane Anna Heyes is a British artist based in France specialising in children’s and decorative Illustration.

Jane was born in Exeter in 1967. Growing up in Bath as a child but now lives in Carcassonne in France with Potsie her Basset Hound, from which she describes how she draws daily and is her inspiration for many of her illustrations.

Jane was inspired as a child by her dad’s best friend who was a freelance designer and so in later years went onto study a foundation course at Bristol and then a Degree in Textile and surface pattern design.

Jane’s Illustrations are a mixture of patterns and shapes, creative characters and bright colours that dart out of the page. She uses Gouache and pencil and uses fuel in the form of many cups of tea! Jane thrives on being creative and has always loved drawing and painting, especially animals and pattern. She is inspired by the work of Klimt, Henri Rousseau, William Scott and Matisse. When Jane is not illustrating she enjoys spending time with family, cooking for friends who love a good natter, shopping, reading and soaking up a bit of peace and quiet.

Alison Edgson

Alison Edgson is an Irish Artist specialising in Children’s Illustration.

Alison was born in County Down in Northern Ireland situated in a little village by the beach, Later on moving to Monmouthshire in the Wye Valley, along with ‘Kitty’ her 15 year old black and white moggy, Dorry and Duffy who are gorgeous yellow Labradors who she says keep her extremely fit.

Alison came from a fairly artistic family. Her mum who she remembers was able to draw beautiful animals when she was younger and her dad designing comical posters for his local drama group. Not surprisingly influencing Alison to go onto art education by taking a Foundation in Art and Design followed by a Degree in Visual Communication, which covered Graphic Design, animation, Photography and Illustration. Last year Alison was awarded ‘Story Illustrations of the Year by highlights Magazine.

Alison’s Illustrations are beautifully atmospheric and colourful. She generally works with acrylics, either on hot pressed watercolour paper or Bristol board, using coloured pencils to create added detail. When working Alison prefers to work without the distraction of background music so she can process her thoughts. However, when painting more abstract pieces she loves to listen to classical music to inspire her. When Alison is not Illustrating she enjoys spending time outdoors, walking, and gardening and has a passion for creative cookery.

Alida Massari

Alida Massari is an Italian artist specialising in illustration for children including picture books and other children’s publishing.

Alida was born in Roma where she grew up, she now lives in Cerveteri where she has been for the past five years. Cerveteri is a little ancient Etruscan town; this is something that Alida finds inspiration for her illustration work, like the architectural details of the ancient buildings. She also draws inspiration from ancient art, describing her work as “modern but with ancient atmosphere”

Alida has always loved art from a young age at high school she qualified in art, she then went onto complete a specialization in illustration at the European Institute of Design in Rome. She has taken part in many collective illustration exhibitions in Italy that are normally dedicated to her children’s books.

She has won numerous artistic awards, winning the 2008 language learner literature award for the book “Dhoroty” from the Extensive Reading Foundation England

Alida likes to work with acrylic colours, collage and watercolour when creating her illustrations. She loves books and finding solutions for her stories. When she starts a new book she tries to aim to transmit new emotions through her drawing.

Two of her favourite children’s books are “Anansi and the bag of wisdom” Usborne (London) and “Raffaello e la fornarina” Lapis (Italy).  When Alida is not illustrating she loves reading books and playing with her daughter.

Lisa Perry Biography

Lisa Perry is a greetings card and children’s illustrator represented by Advocate art – illustration agency. Lisa has designed children’s clothing and greeting cards for various leading retail stores. Her work is very cute and colourful with a great sense of fun and playfulness.

In her free time Lisa loves spending time with her family and watching classic movies, listening to rock music. She also does lots of crochet and jewellery making.

Ileana Oakley Biography

Ileana Oakley is a freelance artist, specialising in greeting card illustration. Ileana was born in Farnborough, Kent and now lives in the Georgian market town of Stamford, Lincolnshire with her husband and son. After studying fashion design at Northampton University, Ileana went on to work at London’s Richmond Theatre in the wardrobe department. She looked after the costumes and was a dresser for many well-known actors including Stephen Fry, Rik Mayall, Susannah York, Trevor Eve, Derek Jacobi and Frances Barbour to name just a few.

Whlle working in the theatre, Ileana continued to build a portfolio of artwork as she always dreamt of being a full-time artist. It was around this time that Advocate took her on and she has never looked back! Her work is contemporary and has a naive charm, with the majority created in acrylic media and often incorporating elements of collage.

Ileana is inspired by fashion, theatre, film and copious amounts of tea. In the rare moments when not at her drawing board or running around after her young son, she also loves yoga, cooking and growing her own fruit & veg in her garden.

Dorota Rewerenda Biography

Dorota rewerenda is a Children’s book illustrator represnted by Advocate Art – illustration agency. When she was younger her parents used to read to her a lot and she loved picture books, so this is where her interest in illustration began. She says she was very imaginative as a child, which helps her to create now.

When Dorota was 15 she was enrolled onto an art course where she learnt to draw. Then she went on to study Fine Art and Graphics.  So now her own personal work is very detailed, colorful, with rich textures and specific characters, additional emotional elements which do not always appear in the story. In her illustrations Dorota likes to combine pastels, pencils, wax crayons, pen and ink and colored pencils and then scan every sketch or texture to a digital program where where she adds further elements using her tablet.

Outside of the artistic field Dorota loves her animals, nature, traveling, books, ethnic and folk music, biking, music festivals. She also keeps four Kakariki parrots, one gecko that she found in a piece of broccoli, and one adopted hamster.
