Illustrator Spotlight: Meet Chris Embleton-Hall

The first two delightful books in the Little Discoveries series are published this month. We chat to the lovely UK illustrator, Chris Embleton-Hall.

What inspired you to become an illustrator?

I had always drawn from an early age and used to spend a few hours drawing with my Grandad. I suppose it developed from there.

What do you love the most about your job?
Creating artwork that other people will get enjoyment from and seeing a finished book in print.

How long does it take you to illustrate a book like Little Discoveries?

Can depend on other workloads at the time but probably about 4 to 6 weeks.

Who is your favourite character in the Little Discoveries series so far?
Probably Scooter the Cat.

Any advice for up and coming illustrators?
It is hard work and took me about a year of taking my portfolio around before I was lucky enough to be taken on by my agent, Advocate. I have been with them 10 years now and the work has kept coming. Perseverance is the key and I am now looking at hiring a workspace to keep my homelife and worklife separate. After 10 years of working from home I need a bit of social interaction as it can be a bit isolating so hopefully this will add to my illustration experience. I wouldn’t do any other job though.

Big Up for Christine Tappin!

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

At Advocate we really love to hear when our illustrators and clients are working well together. So imagine how happy we were to hear about this message sent to our artist Christine Tappin. Have a look on the Advocate website to see more of Christine’s work.

We’re so pleased that you’ve enjoyed working on the project, and that it’s proven to be such a good learning experience for you! Also I have to say how impressed I am that even though you were in loads of pain with your neck and arm, you always met deadlines and never complained to us about it but found ways of improving the situation and helping it get better :) We work with some artists who are always asking for more time due to pretty minor issues so the fact that you dealt with something that really impacted your work, so well and professionally, is fantastic!

I’m really glad you’re almost back to normal now – I do a lot of pilates too, I love it :)

Thanks for being so lovely and easy to work with, you’ve made the project a pleasure to do – hopefully we can work together again soon, as your work is really loved by everyone here!

Josema Carrasco Illustrations on Youtube

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

At Advocate art we have recently signed new book artist Josema Carrasco. Instead of the more conventional portfolio, Josema has used animation to showcase his illustrations. With all the images timed to backing music we think this is great! Click on the link below to see Josema’s animation, and click here to visit his portfolio on the Advocate art website.
