Maurizio Campidelli Biography

Monday, February 25th, 2013

Advocate would like to introduce you to one of our artists, Maurizio Campidelli. Influenced by the 70′s marvel comics, his attention to detail and action packed illustrations have brought him huge success. You can see more of Maurizio’s fantastic work on his Advocate Portfolio by clicking here.

“I was born on June 6th, 1962 in Riccione, a little tourist town on the Italian east coast.
I lived in Ravenna where I studied Graphic Design and Illustration at the Art School. I also I had my first studio here, and I still live here, working near the sea.
When i was three years old i broke my left leg, and my mother bought me two comics, ‘Mickey Mouse’ and ‘Tex’
These were the cause of my future career. I started to draw very soon and when I was ten I knew that I would become and illustrator. The most important influences came from the artists of Marvel Comics Group of the ’70s, specifically Jim Steranko and Barry Windsor-Smith.
Usually, when I begin a new work I need silence and quiet to sketch, but then I need rhythm! In my soundtrack I have punk and english new wave, but also Frank Zappa, Kraftwerk, Pizzicato Five and.. Lady Gaga!
The modern love pop songs are not present on my i-pod!
I’ve displayed my artwork in many exhibitions, mainly in Italy, but also in Paris and Taiwan.
In 2012 I won a design competition for my logo design for the 90th birthday of the Common of Riccione!
My best works include the covers for a fantasy novel series named “History of Dragons, Wizards and Warriors”.
When I’m not working, I love to watch movies (Quentin Tarantino, Stanley Kubrik, Ridley Scott…)
I love to spend my time at the beach, and if I weren’t an illustrator, I would have been a lifeguard so I could be there all the time!”

I moved to Manchester after I gained a degree in Graphic Design from Bolton University and have lived and worked there as a digital creative ever since.
Manchester has a great creative hub and I feel lucky to be surrounded by so many inspiring people.
My work is generally sketched, then coloured in Illustrator and textured in Photoshop.

Other randomness about me:
I love travelling.
I have two mongrel dogs, Spike and Cody.
The Muppet Christmas Carol is my favourite film.

I was born in 1961 in Bergamo, a beautiful medieval town in northern Italy known for being the home to artists including Caravaggio.

I am descended from a family of artists, painters, sculptors and poets, since childhood I have been instructed in the art of drawing and painting by my uncle painter Tullio Petteni, who also nurtured in me a passion for photography, which was my main profession for about 30 years.

I have always worked with the images as a photographer, graphic designer, illustrator, combining my experiences in various fields from paper, pagination, to advertising and design.

In 1988 I discovered the computer graphics into which I poured all my experiences, I developed the first system for coloring comics with just a PC, I have taught courses in computer graphics and I have worked with various advertising agencies in Milan.

To be more independent and spend more time with my family, illustration has been my main job, which gives me the amazing opportunity to work at home.

I perform my work with my trusty MacBookPro and Wacom tablet with Photoshop and a series of brushes that I created to simulate the various techniques such as watercolor, oil, pencil, charcoal etc.

I am happy that I can continue to make works of art as my ancestors did, even with the use of modern means.

Nita Darsona Biography

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to tell you a bit more about Nita Darsona. We adore Nita’s various characters and all of her unique illustrations. Her use of colour and shape works well together with her way of working. Her work is suited for childrens illustration. Read on to learn more about Nita, or see more of her work in her portfolio on the Advocate website.

Nita Darsona was born Jakarta, Indonesia in 1982. She grew up in Surabaya and never moved away from her hometown. Nita’s biggest childhood influences was probably the passionate interest in sesame street, japanese manga and childrens illustration books. Her dad was the one with the strongest artistic soul in the family ( he’s a musician). His drawing may not have been the best, but it was so contageous.  Nita has always been fond in Aurélie Neyret, Regina Silva, Emmeline Pidgens and Gemma Correll’s works. Nita would describe her artwork as deconstructed doodle as she draws impulsively. Whenever something interesting (or not) happens, she just grabs her on-the-go sketch book and locks the memory into it. When she gets home, she scans it, does a little tinkering, and uploads it to her blog / facebook. Nita would describe herself as in-betweener (since she is not yet a professional illustrator).  She creates the design, the copywriting and the crafting. Nita has participated in 4 exhibitions with BRAngerous (Women’s art community in Indonesia) for the last 3 years. I did “Draw Anything on Everything” drawing workshop in late 2011 and became a panelist in several creative gatherings. Up next is Cergamboree Comic Week for a comic exhibition held by Institut Français d’Indonésie. She is listed in BRAngerous Women Art Community and is a contributor in the  independent public library and creative space C2O Library. Nita lives with her husband (who draws his peculiar interest, Zombies) and pet Pepito, a fat cat that often becomes her drawing inspiration.
Her favourite book is Little Prince (antoine de saint-exupery) and dr.seuss’. She is also a HUGE HUGE fan of Studio Ghibli, especially Tonari no-Totoro.

Gary Waters Biography

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Advocate Art would like you to meet freelance illustrator Gary Waters. We love how Gary uses mixed media and collage to create his images. His work would work really well for greetings card design as well as general Art licensing and Art for products. Read on to learn more about Gary, or see more of his work in his portfolio on the Advocate Art illustration agency website.

I grew up in a rough, tough, Welsh mining town. At school I was an academic disaster, but thanks to the encouragement of two exceptional art teachers I discovered I could draw, and was fortunate enough to gain a place at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Since leaving Art College I’ve had a pretty varied life and career as a painter, a photographer and now an illustrator. I’ve lived in the U.K. and the U.S.A. and since 1991 in a small rural village in south west France.

My work has been published and exhibited internationally. A particular highlight was a solo show in Venice. I remember delivering the  paintings one early February morning, loading the work onto a barge  as a winter sun rose through the mist on the Grand Canal.

If I wasn’t an artist, I don’t know what I would be. I’ve often thought that I could probably make a living as a stand up comic.

Carl Morris Biography

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Advocate Art would like to present freelance illustrator Carl Morris. Graduated from the University of Gloucestershire, he enjoys illustrating using ink and also works digitally. His work can be seen in our picture book folio on the illustration agency website his vibrant characters and atmospheric scenes are perfect for children’s pictures books.

As of 27th September 1989, I was born and raised in a town called Brierley Hill which is about 10 very long roads from Birmingham. The town itself doesn’t make the list of 1000 places you should visit before you die, in fact I predict that people who drive through suddenly become homesick and quickly wind up their windows for fear of what’s out there. Admittedly, the place is full of fruit-loops and crazies but this was fantastic when I was growing up because scenarios for drawing could practically be purchased there, not with money but with conversation. I talked…well they talked and then I just spent a few minutes after trying to decipher what they we’re actually talking about and perhaps create a drawing from it. However, I now live in Bournemouth with my girlfriend where inspiration pretty much just oozes because in comparison to the midlands, it’s perfect place to be in every way.

As of recently, I am a postgraduate student of the University of Gloucestershire after studying three years on an Illustration BA(Hons) course. It was really this course that gave me my realization that I should draw for a living and not just as a hobby. After a lot of media exploration, I found that I proffered to work in Ink or Digital. With ink, I have quite a complex style which makes the eye stay on the image to explore. I do like working this way; it has a hand-made raw feel to it.  The pieces that are made in digital are completely different in style and complexity. With this media I try to create pieces that are lush with colour. This way of working is my favourite because of the atmosphere you can create, although you do forget to blink and after a few hours you start to look a bit like ‘Hypno-toad’ from ‘Futurama’.

The important thing that I need you to know is that I enjoy what I do and I will put every effort into any work I produce for you. I’m a night owl and live in a cave (it’s really a room) where all I like to do is draw and listen to films on the TV. If I’m not listening to the films on TV, I’m probably listening to a soundtrack of a film on my laptop; The Dark knight, Inception (anything from Hans Zimmer) or something just as motivational like The Matrix or Scooby Doo.

Rudolf Farkas Biography

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Rudolf’s attention to detail and use of painting techniques is very effective and this results in spectacular imageries. Perfect for traditional greetings cards, puzzles and wall art! Check out more of his work in his portfolio on the illustration agency website.

I  was born in Hungary in Middle Europe  in 1959 and I am still living here! Because e I live in the city I can express my love of nature and animals through my artwork.

I am continuously developing my talent which I discovered  at an early age. I graduated in 1978  after four years at Fine Art School. I served two years in the army and then I worked for Wessely Tibor open fine art group. Hereby I seize the opportunity to thank for Mr Tibor Wessely and Gyula Bubárnik who were a great inspiration and learning source for me. The group has mainly concentrated on the realistic paintings and I picked up a lot of knowledge on this subject, but I think that a major factor in my ability is due to my diligence and endurance.

My artwork has been shown in many group and individual exhibitions. My  artwork can be seen in the galleries of Budapest, but the majority of my work is displayed around the world. In 2005 a leading book publisher in Hungary asked me to produce book illustrations and at the moment this work takes up most of my time. Over the past few years my illustrations have been published  in more than 40 books and even more magazines!

Dasa Simcic Biography

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Advocate Art would love to present Dasa Simcic who is a fantastic children’s book illustrator from Slovenia. Her watercolour illustration is vivid and quirky and would be really strong for children’s picture books. Learn more about freelance illustrator Dasa by reading on or visit her portfolio on the Advocate website to see more of her work!

I was born in Ljubljana, but now I live in Škofja Loka, one of the oldest towns in my country Slovenia. I have an older brother, who is a sculptor. As a child I admired him and probably because of him I went to study on the Academy of fine arts.

While studying I worked in the Puppet Theatre. At the same time I moved into my own apartment. There were a lot of cats around and one of them adopted me. Children in our yard gave it the name Miška – Mouse. Mouse was my model and so happened my first book for children entitled Kitty Millie. I was immensely happy, and it still is my favourite book, although I have illustrated more than forty children books.

First illustrations I worked were in watercolour technique; I like the transparency of watercolour, colour blending, drops, and freshness. Now I’m working with tempera, coloured pencils,…

While I work, I prefer silence. I am looking for a silence also when I stroll around the hills around my town. I love nature, I love my pets. I have one dog, two cats and one hamster. But favourite of all is my daughter Gala.

I don’t only listen to the silence I also love watching movies, usually I prefer European cinema.

Alan Brown Biography

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Advocate Art presents illustrator Alan Brown. His graphic illustration style is bright and vibrant his work has shows charming blend of modern and vintage styles, which is very appealing. His work is perfect for young fiction illustration. Check out more of his work on the Advocate Art website!

Every journey begins with the first step and in my case in to my Granny’s newsagents where she stocked the latest DC and 2000AD comics. From a young age this kicked started my illustration career. Watching Hanna Barbara and Tex Avery cartoons on a Saturday afternoon with a 10p mix-up was also valued research. I studied advertising illustration in Newcastle, and this lead me to a 13 year career in illustration and design. My natural style carries a light hearted feel like my inspirations Jim Henson, Rolf Harris and jamie Hewlett. All of my artwork is created with my faithful Wacom tablet in Photoshop from sketch to finished article. To help me settle into work each day I listen to 2 Tone and Northern Soul, as well as the demands of my schnauzer, Ollie, who reminds me to take breaks (and where the treats are kept).
