Summer 2012 Colour Palette
May 2nd, 2012As fashion and art licensing begin to merge more and more, Advocate, as an image licensing company, appreciates the benefits of staying in touch with fashion and trend forecasts, particularly when it comes to colour! One of our illustrators, Janes Heyes, spotted this Louis Vuitton advert and sent it in to us. Here at Advocate Art we think that they have got the colours spot on for one of the summer 2012 palettes. We think the mixture of green, red and pink is gorgeous. Open this image in adobe kuler to play with the palette for yourself!

Sally Garland Biography
May 1st, 2012Advocate Art would like to tell you a little bit more about Sally Garland, one of our most popular illustrators. Her colourful, quirky style is perfect for children’s book illustration and greetings card illustration and has been popular with many of our clients. Read on to learn more about Sally’s history and background or visit her portfolio to see more of her work.
I was born in Hereford, England then my parents moved up to the Highlands of Scotland when I was three.
I grew up in a small town called Alness which is near Inverness in the Highlands. I then moved down to Edinburgh to study before settling in Glasgow where I live today with my partner Ronnie and our son Johnny.
According to my parents, at the age of four I was very inspired by Rolf Harris and in true Rolf style my first really good drawing was a large mural in crayon on their sitting-room wall.
I studied Illustration and Graphic Design for four years at Edinburgh College Of Art.
I love a lot of French illustrators such as Delphine Durand, Marc Boutavant and the Belgian artist Vincent Mathy.
I like the subtle observations in their work which is often very humorous and understated. There is a quality in their illustration that really captures the ‘very busy doing stuff’, chaotic nature of childhood – the little mishaps children have that makes us smile as adults. I think like most children’s illustrators it is the observation of childhood and the imaginative world that children inhabit that is a continual source of inspiration.
I also love vintage illustration and the work of illustrators such M Sasek, Alain Gree and Lewitt-Him.
I would describe my work as slightly quirky and whimsical.
I use both traditional mediums such as acrylic paint and pencil as well as digital packages such as Illustrator and Photoshop.
I’m primarily a children’s illustrator although I work part-time as a graphic designer which is a source of steady income and also gives me a good understanding of the printing process and producing artwork commercially.
I’ve been enjoying a lot of the digital work I’ve produced recently as it is a very quick and immediate way of working, giving a spontaneity to my work particularly when I’m able to combine it with other methods such as pencil drawings and painted textures.
I enjoy reading with my book club, watching movies and walking.

Chris Embleton in Australia…
April 30th, 2012Today at Advocate we learnt that one of our artists, Chris Embleton, is featured on the front page of the Ice Water Press website, they are an Australian publisher of children’s books. Not only does the new children’s book he illustrated appear in ‘featured this month’ but he is also their featured artist! Read on the see the interview, have a look at his book on the Ice Water Press website or visit Chris’ children’s book illustration portfolio on our website to see more of his work!

Illustrator Spotlight: Meet Chris Embleton-Hall
What inspired you to become an illustrator?
I had always drawn from an early age and used to spend a few hours drawing with my Grandad. I suppose it developed from there.
What do you love the most about your job?
Creating artwork that other people will get enjoyment from and seeing a finished book in print.
How long does it take you to illustrate a book like Little Discoveries?
Can depend on other workloads at the time but probably about 4 to 6 weeks.
Who is your favourite character in the Little Discoveries series so far?
Probably Scooter the Cat.
Any advice for up and coming illustrators?
It is hard work and took me about a year of taking my portfolio around before I was lucky enough to be taken on by my agent, Advocate. I have been with them 10 years now and the work has kept coming. Perseverance is the key and I am now looking at hiring a workspace to keep my homelife and worklife separate. After 10 years of working from home I need a bit of social interaction as it can be a bit isolating so hopefully this will add to my illustration experience. I wouldn’t do any other job though.

Past Meets Present
“Two themes crop up here: a combination of traditional crafting techniques (appliqué, cross-stitch, knitting etc.) are given a modern digital look with a 1950s’ colour palette; and an Edwardian take which combines traditional botanical etchings with a modern colour palette of teal, muted mauve and lemon yellow.”
Design Classics
“Taking inspirations from mid-20th century design icons such as typewriters, telephones and classic movie posters, this colour palette is bold and masculine”
Holiday Time
‘The final trend we’re expecting to see a lot of in the coming months, this combines bright, bold prints with tropical icons such as parrots, palm trees and pineapples. We are also seeing a resurgence of nautical-themed icons such as anchors and retro sailor tattoos, tying in nicely with British seaside nostalgia. “
